Garbage vans ‘missing’, spoils D-decor zeal

At a time when they are needed most, the much vaunted waste collection vehicles have disappeared from the roads. As people are busy cleaning and sprucing up their houses ahead of Diwali, there is sudden spurt in solid waste.

The city residents are facing trouble in its disposal as door-to-door waste collection project in the city is not serving the required purpose.

Heaps of waste is lying in the corner of houses as waste collection vehicles hasn’t picked up waste from past two days in many areas. The Door to Door Waste Collection is being done by BVG India Ltd of Pune in 60 wards out of 91 of the city. Recently, the municipal administration received complaints from the people regarding poor sanitation management.

Also, the councillors expressed displeasure over the works of the company by giving their feedback to the municipal officials.

They also raised the issue in the General Body Meeting held recently. There are frequent complaints against the company for not taking garbage on time.  

According to JMC sources, daily 500 tonnes of garbage is being generated in each area. Typically, 1200-1300 tons of garbage is accumulated daily in the city. But during Diwali the figure has shot up to 1800-1900 tons on a daily basis.
