Preparations are on in full swing for the Swabhiman Rally (self-respect) being organised by BJP MLA from Sheo at Pachpadra on Saturday. Leading the preparations is Chitra Singh, the wife of Manvendra Singh. It is believed that Manvendra Singh could make a major announcement regarding future course of action at the rally. Thousands are expected to participate.

On Friday, Manvendra Singh and Chitra Singh travelled extensively across villages in Barmer to invite people for the rally. A huge tent has been erected at Pachpadra in Barmer for the Swabhiman Rally that  largely hopes to cash in on Rajput ire against Raje government. The issue of stalwart BJP leader Jaswant Singh being denied a ticket in 2014 elections and ticket being given to Congress crossover Col Sonaram is a major basis of the narrative to promote the rally.

Adding to the speculations is talk of Sheetal Kanwar, wife of Jaswant Singh joining the rally tomorrow. She is expected to come by a helicopter from Delhi where she lives to attend to Jaswant Singh who is in ill health. Sheetal Kanwar had extensively campaigned for her husband in 2014 and had also crossed swords with Vasundhara Raje by filing a complaint over a temple of Raje built in Jodhpur.

Dressed in traditional Rajput attire with a long veil covering her face, Chitra Singh wife of Manvendra Singh, is now a familiar face urging people to join the rally. “People are joining us as they feel betrayed. Party workers feel fielding Col Sonaram was a wrong decision. People have stood with us since 2014 and we need to respect everyone’s Swabhiman,” she said. Chitra Singh, however, refuted all speculations that she would be joining politics, “I am not joining politics. I do it for the family I am involved for their respect.”

Manvendra Singh said, “This is not our Swabhiman, it is about the respect of all people.” However, he cleverly dodged question about speculations of him leaving BJP and joining Congress, “What I will do where I will go, I cannot tell. It will be decided by the people in the rally tomorrow.”

The rally is expected to be an important milestone that will change the political equations in Western Rajasthan regarding parties and communities.
