Signals from top echelons of BJP indicate that it has decided not to change the state president in Rajasthan for now. Party insiders say that there was no plan of changing the state chief till Parliament polls are completed. But in actuality the party had done preliminary exercise for the same and even considered a few names. Satish Punia, Arun Chaturvedi and Gajendra Singh Shekhawat were said to being considered for the post.

But what stopped them was the ground situation and the realisation that a change would not serve the purpose that was being aimed.

The organisation model that Amit Shah is seeking to develop would necessitate a change in the state, district and grassroot structure of party organisation. A process that would require 6-8 weeks to be completed. And the short timeline before the LS polls does not give the party this liberty. “Carving out a new team from state to booth level is a definite process that takes time. It also requires homework and the choice of functionaries at various levels also matters,” said a senior leader.

On the other hand not doing a revamp would merely be effecting a cosmetic change, a situation very much similar to when the state president was changed in June last year.

Then too the organisation set up continued to function with post holders who had been part of outgoing president Ashok Parnami’s team.

Rumours of conflict between central leadership and former CM Vasundhara Raje had caused a confusion of loyalties in the party structure. “We are party workers, but we do have a soft corner for the person who gave us an opportunity. Workers work with more enthusiasm when their leader is calling shots or wielding power,” said a district president who did not wish to be named.

Even now BJP stands at a juncture where rumours of Raje being made national vice president to thereby make her redundant in state politics are doing the rounds. BJP taking an electoral battering has also put the party on back foot.

This situation has by default given Raje an advantaged situation as the organisation still has a team set up by her loyalist Parnami. It puts her in a situation where the BJP central leadership would have to be accommodating and function in tandem with her for LS polls.

Meanwhile, the party has decided that there would be some changes. “Some people would be dropped while some would be taken on board. All these will be to accommodate senior leaders and to add people who can benefit the party,” said a senior functionary.

BJP is poised at a crucial juncture where it will have to take a call on what its priorities are. Winning seats in the forthcoming elections or revamping organisation structure to its liking.
