‘The hospital got nod for trials but did not provide adequate information to volunteers’
The Union health ministry has taken cognizance of ‘unethical’ clinical trials on humans at Malpani Hospital in Jaipur. So much so, that two days after the matter came to light, a probe team comprising experts from the Union health ministry reached Malpani Hospital on Sunday to investigate the matter. When asked if a clean chit was given to the hospital for now, a team member said that the matter is under investigation.
The four-member probe committee comprising experts from the central health department, Drug Controller General of India and Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation went to Malpani Hospital in the morning and stayed there for more than six hours. During investigation, the committee vetted and seized all documents related to the trial.
No clean chit
“Though primarily it was found that the hospital had got the seal of approval for the drug trials, it seems that patients on whom the trials were conducted were not ‘well informed’ about the procedure by the hospital.Investigation is on and it will take at least two to three days to prepare a probe report,” said one of the members of the team present at the hospital.

Another four-member committee, formed by the state health department, is also investigating the alleged unethical drug trials. This committee headed by additional director Dr Ravi Prakash had visited Malpani Hopsital on Saturday. Director of Public Health Dr VK Mathur told DNA that the committee is supposed to submit its investigation report by Monday evening. Dr Mathur said that during the probe, it has been found that the hospital had received 38 packets of drugs for trials but the team found only 35 packets at the hospital. The hospital administration failed to give a satisfactory reply on the three missing packets.
