In India, more than 17 Lakh people die every year due to heart diseases and by 2030, the figure is expected to increase with 2.3 crore deaths. Around 26 percent of total deaths in India occur due to non-communicable diseases (NCD), largely referred to the heart diseases and diabetes.

As per the World Health Organization, Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the major cause of mortality globally, as well as in India. “Heart failure and heart attack both are forms of heart disease having some common causes but they also differ in key ways,” Dr Ruchi Gupta, Senior Cardiologist said. “Most heart attacks happen suddenly when one of the arteries leading to the heart gets blocked and cuts off the blood flow. Heart failure, on the other hand, usually develops gradually. The heart muscle becomes weaker and has trouble pumping blood to nourish the cells in your body,” she added.

According to the Indian Heart Association, 50% of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 50 years of age and 25% of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 40 years of age. Population in cities is three times more prone to heart attacks than people living in the village.

As per doctors, symptoms of a heart attack or heart failure vary from person to person, also can be different for men and women. Some common signs of heart attacks are like chest pain, shortness of breath, excessive tiredness, chronic coughing or wheezing, nausea or lack of appetite, high heart rate, confusion or impaired thinking.

Heart failure, often referred to as congestive heart failure (CHF), occurs when the heart muscle is weakened and unable to pump sufficiently to maintain blood flow to meet the body’s needs. “The easiest way to avoid heart problems is to know the symptoms that can be fatal for you. Keep obesity, diabetes, cholesterol in control. Take special attention on eating habits. Do not eat too much fried things and sweets. Blood pressure should be in control and stay away from alcohol and smoking,” said Dr Ruchi.
