One Border Security Force (BSF) jawan, who was  a native of Bharatpur district, was martyred on Sunday afternoon as an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast occurred in naxal infested area of Chattisgarh. The deceased jawan was positioned in Chattisgarh along with his unit for the upcoming election duty to maintain law and order.

Identified as Sub-Inspector Mahendra Singh, a native of Dumariya village under Rudawal police station area of Bharatpur, the jawan fell victim to a set of six IEDs planted between Kome and Gattakal villages of Kanker district in Chattisgarh.

“The incident occurred around 200 kilometers from state capital, Raipur. The jawan belonged to 35th battalion of BSF. He sustained splinter and bullet injuries in his neck and was rushed for treatment but he succumbed to his injuries on way to hospital,” sources said.

The BSF party was put in the role for area domination as the voting is to be held on Monday. “They were passing through a patch of forest when the blast occurred. Additional forces were rushed in after the incident and a search operation has been initiated to nab those behind the blasts,”sources said.

A pall of gloom descended the jawan’s native village after his family members were informed about the tragic development. The news spread like wildfire in the village and locals turned up at Singh’s residence in huge numbers to console the family members.

Sources say that the body  of the martyr would first be taken to Raipur from where it will be brought to Bharatpur and then to the martyr’s native village and handed to family members. The body is expected to reach Dumariya late on Tuesday evening.

Naxals have executed half-a-dozen blasts in a fortnight wherein 13 people have died including a news cameraman who was covering the election campaigning. The naxals had called for a boycott of elections, thus the polling parties are being sent to sensitive areas amidst tight security.

On November 2, two BSF jawans were injured in an IED blast in the same area while on November 8 an IED blast killed a CISF jawan along with four civilians in Dantewada district.

FINAL JOURNEY

The martyr’s body would first be taken to Raipur from where it will be brought to Bharatpur and then his native village. Body is expected to reach Dumariya late on Tuesday.
