As the rains have started lashing the city, the ill constructed infrastructure of the city is giving in to the force of water. On Monday, a section of road caved in after a nullah at Chomu House Circle and sewage chamber under it burst due to the force of water.

The incident occurred around noon when the traffic was in full swing in the approximate area of the incident. However, no vehicle or person was near the site when the incident occurred. As the road caved in, a huge pit was formed approximately thirty feet in depth.

“Prima facie it appears that the land caved in after the action of water made the base weak. A sewage line runs under the nullah and due to rains, it appears that the chamber of the sewage line burst. This coupled with the excess water running in the nullah washed away the soil under the road and nullah resulting in the cave in,” officials said.

Meanwhile, as the cave in occurred, people rushed away from the spot while signs were put up alerting the vehicle drivers to keep away from the spot.

“The incident created a bottleneck on the road due to which the vehicles took the time to pass the area and one after the other, a line of vehicles formed. Directions were immediately given regarding smooth passing of vehicles while the affected part was cordoned off,” officials said.

Notably, city has been witnessing heavy downpour from past few days and recorded highest rainfall in this monsoon of 65mm on Sunday. The heavy rains resulted in waterlogging in several areas and the collected water on the Elevated Road also lead to few road mishaps. Though no casualties were reported,  the maintenance during this monsoon still remains the question.

Similar mishap last year

The caved in a patch on Gopalpura Road near Gurjar Ki Thadi exposed the shoddy engineering of Jaipur Development Authority(JDA) and the inadequacies of the drainage system maintained by the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC). The engineering cells of the two civic agencies, after the incident, turned to blaming each other for the collapse of the road constructed over the nullah. The officials there claimed that the chamber that collapsed was constructed 20 years ago. “This sewerage chamber is almost 20 years old. Rainwater gushed into it overfilling it and leading to its collapse. There is no case of poor engineering,” said Brijesh Kumar Awasthi, executive engineer with JDA zone-5.
