18th Mother Milk Bank established in Sirohi

So far 2.5 lakh unit milk has been donated by 35,000 lactating mothers

Expanding its repository, Rajasthan has established 18th Mother Milk Bank at Sirohi district hospital. With this, the Anchal/Divya Mother Milk Bank project in the state has now become the largest Human Milk Bank network in Asia, leaving China behind which has 17 Human Milk Banks. Central government has also given financial nod to establish the banks at five more district hospital. This is the first time when mother milk bank will be established with the financial assistance from the central government in any state of the country.

“Rajasthan government is committed to expend it’s ambitious scheme at every district to control infant deaths and prevent malnutrition in children by providing an infant mother’s milk soon after birth,” Devendra Agrawal, consultant to the state government told DNA. 

“This is the next stage after successful establishment and encouraging results of 17 mother’s milk banks at various district hospitals, where mothers can donate their fresh milk for those infants whose mothers are unable to breastfeed,” he added. Currently Rajasthan has 18 human milk banks. In these mother milk banks, so far around 2.5 lakh unit of mother milk has been donated by more than 35,000 lactating mothers. More than 2.28 lakh unit of the milk collected at these banks has been provided to around 24,000 infants.

It is worth mentioning that as per various reports Human Milk Bank in China are struggling with the scarcity of donor mothers while in Rajasthan,on the contrary, More than 32,000 unit of milk has been sent to Mother Milk Storage and Distribution Center at Ajmer Medical College where it was provided to 2,220 infants admitted in NICU. As per Agrawal, more than 15,000 unit milk was stored in various Mother Milk Banks till July 31, 2018.

35,127 lactating mother donated 73,554 times. 
75,84,781 ml or 2,46,119 units of mother milk collected. 
24,225 infants in NICUs and in community benefited. 
2,28,886 unit of mother milk provided to infants.
15,180 unit of  mother milk stored in stock.
