Chennai Super Kings’ humiliating 10-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians has potentially thrown them out of the playoff race even mathematically. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, have gone to the top of the table and the likes of Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore need only one more win to seal their spot in the knockout stages.

Mumbai Indians inflicted a massive 10-wicket drubbing over Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2020 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium. MS Dhoni’s side was had lost seven wickets for 44 runs and it took a gritty fifty from Sam Curran to avoid complete humiliation. However, Chennai Super Kings could not withstand the brilliance of Ishan Kishan and Quinton de Kock as Mumbai Indians stormed to a big win. This victory further enhanced Mumbai Indians’ already healthy Net Run-Rate and it has worsened Chennai Super Kings’ NRR. The three-time IPL champions are all but out of the playoff race even mathematically after the loss in Sharjah. However, the battle for the fourth spot is now still open with four teams in the fray.
Teams | Matches | Won | Lost | Points | Net Run Rate |
Mumbai Indians | 10 | 7 | 3 | 14 | 1.448 |
Delhi Capitals | 10 | 7 | 3 | 14 | 0.774 |
Royal Challengers Bangalore | 10 | 7 | 3 | 14 | 0.182 |
Kolkata Knight Riders | 10 | 5 | 5 | 10 | -0.828 |
Sunrisers Hyderabad | 10 | 4 | 6 | 8 | 0.092 |
Kings XI Punjab | 10 | 4 | 6 | 8 | -0.177 |
Rajasthan Royals | 11 | 4 | 7 | 8 | -0.620 |
Chennai Super Kings | 11 | 3 | 8 | 6 | -0.733 |
Kolkata Knight Riders will take on Delhi Capitals while Kings XI Punjab will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in a crucial double-header for both sides. A win for Kolkata Knight Riders will give them some breathing space but a loss will seal Delhi Capitals’ spot in the playoffs. If either of Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad wins and Kolkata Knight Riders lose, they will go to the fourth spot due to Kolkata Knight Riders’ poor net run-rate.
The Orange Cap race is still led by KL Rahul, the Kings XI Punjab skipper and it looks like only Shikhar Dhawan of Delhi Capitals has the chance to catch up with him with only four games to go. Rahul and Dhawan have been in magnificent form and it will be close tussle between the two star players. However, the fight for the Purple cap has intensified after the Mumbai Indians vs Chennai Super Kings clash. Jasprit Bumrah and Trent Boult picked up six wickets between them, with Boult ending with figures of 4/18 and ripping the Chennai Super Kings top order to shreds. Bumrah continued his wicket-taking form and they remain the only duo from the same team to feature in the top five.
