Chennai Super Kings began their IPL 2020 in grand style with a five-wicket win against four-time champions Mumbai Indians in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. The win for MS Dhoni was his 100th for Chennai Super Kings, making him the only captain to achieve this feat in the history of the IPL. Chennai Super Kings also smashed their five-game losing streak against Mumbai Indians as they signaled their intent for the tournament. However, after the match, MS Dhoni apparently ruffled a few feathers with his statement.

“To make it happen there are a hundred different things; as cricketers, we easily criticize stuff. To have the practice facilities like these at the ICC academy were fantastic. Unless you get practice facilities you won't play well in a tournament like this,” MS Dhoni said.

The statement that ‘as cricketers, we easily criticize stuff’ is been seen as a jibe against Suresh Raina. The left-hander arrived in the UAE with the Chennai Super Kings but he shockingly chose to leave the IPL 2020 due to personal reasons. Several theories have been floated about Raina’s withdrawal. It has been reported that Suresh Raina did not like the choice of the hotel room and he wanted one as similar as MS Dhoni’s. Former BCCI president N Srinivasan had labelled cricketers as ‘Prima Donas’ only to later retract by saying that his statements were taken out of context.

Raina out of IPL 2020

Suresh Raina’s departure was a shock to many fans. The leading run-getter for Chennai Super Kings in the history of the Indian Premier League was expected to play a pivotal role in the three-time champions line-up after announcing his retirement on the same day as MS Dhoni.

Raina might not feature in the IPL 2020 but one hopes that the doors to Chennai Super Kings are open in future editions of the IPL.
