In a suspected case of honour killing, a young couple was brutally killed with sharp-edged weapons allegedly by the girl's father and two brothers in Bhullar village, 25 km from Amritsar, police said today.

Amarjit Kaur, 21, and Sarbjit Singh, 23, residents of the same village, were hacked to death late last night in an isolated field in the village, they said.

According to police, the two youngsters were in a relationship. While Kaur and her family wanted them to get married, Sarabjit was not interested in wedlock but wanted their relationship to continue.

Kaur's family then wanted them to end their relation but could not prevent their daughter from regularly meeting Sarabjit.

"The girl's family had no objection to their marriage as they were from the same caste. But the boy did not want to get married. He wanted the relationship to go on, to which the girl's parents objected," a police official said.

Last night, Kaur's father Kulwinder Singh and brothers Gurpreet and Harpreet killed both of them with sharp weapons in an isolated field in the village, he said.

All three accused are absconding and a police team has been sent to nab them, the official said, adding that a case has been registered in this regard.

He said the bodies, bearing multiple deep cuts and severe injuries inflicted by sharp-edged weapons on various parts, have been sent for autopsy.
