Low lying areas in east Delhi have been evacuated in anticipation of Yamuna river crossing the danger mark following water release from Haryana's Hathini Kund on Tuesday, a state minister said.

"Around 6,22,000 cusecs of water have been released from Hathini Kund, which is likely to take 40 hours to reach Delhi," Delhi Revenue Minister AK Walia said. "This can result in a serious flood like situation.”

The river's current mark is 203.64 metres, very close to the warning level of 204 metres. The level is likely to touch 206 metres. "Low lying areas have been evacuated in east Delhi," Walia added.

Irrigation and flood department control rooms will be working along the marginal bunds on both sides of Yamuna, according to Walia. Fifty-six boats and pumps have also been pressed into service in the area.
