Tuesday was nothing but 'Women's Day' in the true sense of the word.

While many companies pampered their female employees by arranging special events like movie shows, group outings etc, the men got a break from their everyday routine encounters with women. However, there were several events and activities organized by various institutions in the city and they celebrated 'International Women's Day' in a big way.

Vishwa Gujarati Samaj expanded its reach to the bens living abroad by launching its International Women's Wing on Tuesday. In the presence of over 300 women at GLS auditorium the event started with the performance of underprivileged artists from Samvedana.

This was followed by the speeches on different dimensions of women empowerment such as in the areas of science and technology, education and entrepreneurship. Manjula Shroff, director of CALORX Foundation, Dr. Jayshree Mehta, President of SATWAC Foundation and Paru Jaykrishna, Chairperson & MD of Asahi Songwon Colors addressed the audience.

Members of the Women's Development Cell of Gujarat University celebrated the day at the GU Senate hall. Almost 300 women gathered at the venue to discuss and listen to dignitaries like Dr. Gauri Trivedi, former IAS officer and Director of SIRD, Neetu Shah, Editor of Sakhi magazine and Radha Bhaskar, Director of Mudra dance academy. The topic of today's seminar was 'Women's Empowerment - Challenges Ahead'. 

Almost 1000 women from all over Gujarat gathered at the Sardar Baug, Lal Darwaja to celebrate Women's Day. These women include tribal, Dalit, Muslim and widows from eight districts of Gujarat.

Gujarat Vidyapeeth also celebrated international women's day. Dr. Vinu Patel was the chief guest on the occasion and he stressed on the need to start an awareness campaign. He also added that some elements in society still hinder the progress of women in different walks of life and steps need to be taken to support the fairer sex in all their endeavours.

Girl students from Bhavnagar University, who have  been outstanding in academics met CM Narendra Modi.
