A woman has been arrested for allegedly hiring former militants for Rs50,000 to get her husband killed after he stalled her efforts to start her own business in Baramulla district, police said today.

Investigations into a firing incident in Wagoora area of Baramulla district last Tuesday, in which two girls were injured, have revealed that Hasina, wife of Ghulam Mohiuddin Akhoon, had hatched a criminal conspiracy to eliminate him.

Unidentified gunmen had opened fire through the window of a house in an attempt to kill Akhoon, an engineer, but he escaped unhurt. However, his 19-year-old sister and 10-year-old niece were injured.

Hasina has been arrested along with three other accused while police have launched a manhunt to nab one co-conspirator in the crime, a police spokesperson said.

Hasina, who comes from a well-to-do family, wanted to start a boutique. However, her husband objected to it and had forced her to wind up her business twice over the past few years, he said.

The woman, who has two sons and twin daughters, suffered losses and finalised a deal to sell a plot of land in Srinagar to pay off her debts.

The deal was, however, scuttled by Akhoon after he came to know about it. The woman had taken Rs five lakh advance from the brokers, who were pressurising her to pay it back, police said.

One of the brokers, Ghulam Ahmad Hajam, introduced her to released militants and counter-insurgents who could help her to eliminate Akhoon, the spokesman said.

"She was introduced to Nazir Ahmed Beigh alias Jana who along with Mohammad Shafi, Showkat Ahmed Khan, Bashir Ahmed and Mohammad Iqbal Dar hatched to conspiracy to kill Akhoon and fixed the amount for executing the task at Rs50,000," he said.

The attackers first made an attempt to kill Akhoon at Sopore on January 27 but failed. Then they made another attempt on February 15 but Akhoon again survived the bid, the spokesman said.

All the accused have been arrested except Showkat Ahmad Khan, who is absconding.
