The husband of a woman member of a gram panchayat in Amreli has lodged two complaints with the Dhari police station alleging that his wife was gang-raped by a BJP MLA and his henchmen.
The woman has alleged in the complaint that as many as 20 people had gang-raped her six months back. The police are trying to verify the allegations made in the complaints and may register an FIR if sufficient evidence substantiating the allegations is found.

The police, however, say that there are inconsistencies in the two complaints filed on behalf of the victim. In the first complaint, she has alleged that she was raped by BJP MLA from Dhari, Mansukh Bhuva, and his associate Atul Kanani, secretary of the Dhari unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party, the police said.

In the second complaint, however, she has alleged that she was raped by Bhuva, Kanani, and 18 other people (4 members of Dhari Gram Panchayat and 14 unidentified men) in an Indica car.  According to the complaint, the alleged gang-rape took place six months back.

"We have recorded the victim's statement and sent her for medical tests," said HR Mulyana, superintendent of police, Amreli
district.

"Prima facie, the complaint appears to be unreliable. The car's registration number given in the complaint was found to be that of a Qualis car and not an Indica as mentioned by her," the SP said.

"We are waiting for the results of the medical tests and some corroborative evidence so that we can decide whether there is any truth in the victim's allegations," he said.  Meanwhile, residents of Dhari observed a bandh in support of Mansukh Bhuva who, they say, is innocent. The bandh was complete and peaceful for the whole day.

Police sub-inspector of Dhari police station and investigating officer, CG Rathod, said that the police are investigating the case and if any incriminating evidence is found, an FIR will be registered.

The victim has alleged that she got a call from one of Bhuva's colleagues who called her to a deserted place. "The complaint says that she was raped by Bhuva and his 19 associates," Rathod told DNA.

When contacted for his comments, Bhuva said: "This is an attempt to ruin my political career. I have nothing to do with the incident. I am also surprised how they have filed a complaint against me. The police will take action according to law."
