It seems Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation officials are apathetic towards chabutara conservation. A day after the shocking tale of theft of six figurines from the 400-year-old chabutara on the riverfront surfaced, the civic body is yet to initiate any remedial action in this regard.

Residents of that area also claimed that this is not the first time that something of this nature has happened. "Many years back, there used to be a statue of cow inside the chabutara. However, it has gone missing," said a local resident, who has been living near the chabutara since 1995.

On Wednesday, DNA had reported the shocking story of ancient statues missing from a heritage chabutara near Ramwadi, situated opposite an ancient Shiv Temple under the Ellisbridge.
According to residents, the chabutara is more than 400 years old.

"We have no idea when, how and who might have stolen these priceless statues," said Ram Singh, a resident of that area, who also stated that the shocking incident must have happened recently.

The chabutara is among the important monuments
of the city, and was recognised as a heritage structure by the civic body. But the chairman of the Heritage Committee is still in the dark about the theft.

According to the chairperson of Heritage Committee Bijal Patel, they are yet to begin investigation. "The person in charge was not available today, so I will get the details on Friday," said Patel. On Wednesday, Patel had said that she did not know about the
theft incident.

The AMC had recently demolished houses around the structure for development of the riverfront. Residents claim that during this chaos, miscreants might have stolen the statues.

"The chabutara is not protected by any fence, so it is not possible to stop people from accessing the structure," said Ashok Vaghela, a resident, who is also worried about a statue, which is still lying inside the chabutara. "Officials must take care of this, otherwise everything will be gone one day," Vaghela laments.
