We must keep rivers pollution-free: Modi

Gandhinagar: Chief minister Narendra Modi visited the site of 'Sabarmati Riverfront Development project' on Thursday to review the project. He spent two hours there and visited different sites.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has taken up the riverfront development project, which is estimated to cost Rs1,182 crore. The project aims to cover 21 km area, which is being developed under the project.

Revenue minister and in-charge of Ahmedabad district Anandiben Patel, urban development minister Nitinbhai Patel, Mayor Kanaji Thakor, standing committee chairman Asit Vora, and municipal commissioner IP Gautam joined the chief minister.

Taking a round, from Subhash bridge to Sardar bridge, Modi sought minute details regarding the various development aspects of the project. He observed the work of walk-way and diaphragm wall and went near the earth filling sites.

Modi stressed the need to preserve and promote the culture and environment of Ahmedabad. He underlined the need to maintain the rich cultural legacy of the city, particularly the historic monuments --Bhadra Kali Fort, Teen Darwaja -- and the Haveli culture of the city. He also emphasised the need to keep the river free of pollutants.

The chief minister discussed all the aspects of environment at depth and issued necessary directives to the officials concerned about the Vasna sewage diversion.

He gave a passionate call to dignitaries of various sectors for taking a lead in tree-plantation drives. Tree saplings would be planted on both the sides of walkway.

The ambitious riverfront development project has undertaken development works to the tune of Rs702 crore, out of which Rs587 crore have already been spent on the project.

Recently, the Hudco has sanctioned a loan of Rs350 crore.
