In the midst of rising debt, tax default woes, employee strife and hordes of other troubles hounding domestic airlines, Chennai-headquartered airline Volk Airlines is all set to begin its full- service flight operations during the summer schedule this year.
If sources are to be believed, the southern carrier will begin operating flights from Bangalore soon. It is not yet known who is the promoter of the airline, but its official website states the airline’s hub is located in Chennai and would be connected to 15 destinations in India.
Sources revealed a Chennai-based private fund owned stake in the airline.
An engineer with Kingfisher, who has taken up the job, said when he went for the interview a week back, he found the place crawling with colleagues.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) chief EK Bharat Bhushan was not reachable on mobile while the former DGCA chief Nasim Zaidi said he was not aware of any application for airline operator’s licence by Volk Airlines.
The airline’s website claims it will offer all classes — business, economy and economy plus — on its flights. And while the website does not share exact fleet size, it shares specifics of an A320-200 under its fleet information section.
Dhiraj Mathur, executive director - aerospace & defence - PricewaterhouseCooper, said there was room for more airlines in the local market because traffic was growing at a healthy clip.
