Vibrant Gujarat summit has kept all most all babus on toes. While IAS officers have been assigned duties at the venue to ensure smooth running of the event in terms of signing of MoUs, GAS and secretariat cadre officers have been roped in for taking care of guests.

Secretariat cadre officers include section officers, under secretaries, deputy secretaries and joint secretaries. From January 9 to 14, most of these officers will be busy with those coming from abroad for the mega meet.

“It is clear order from the government that all class one officers belonging to secretariat cadre will be working for Vibrant Gujarat 2011,” said an under secretary.

Another officer said, “Actually, more than half of the officers in secretariat cadre would be assigned duty as ‘liaison officers’ for various foreign guests, who would be visiting for VG-2011. In other words, we would be working as ‘escorts’ for these foreign delegates. We will be receiving them at the airport and taking them to their hotels. We will also bring them to the venue and take them to the location of their sector to meet up with higher level officers.”

An officer, who has been given the job as liaison officer, said: “Actually, these foreign delegates need to be dealt with impressively, so officers who can speak English fluently have been handpicked for this job.”

These officers also hinted that they had been sidelined and given such laborious work. “Our duties would be limited to ensure the comfort stay and movement of these guests. They will be talking to other officials for MoU-related matters,” said an officer. Besides, nearly 100 GAS cadre officers have been called from their present postings in various districts. However, their feelings are different.

“While the IAS cadre officers would be running around for the success of the event, we would be doing our bit. Actually liaison officers from the state government side would be talking to the liaison officers of the big industrialists to keep them informed about their turn and place for signing of MoUs.”
