In a bid to check steep hike in prices of essential commodities, Uttar Pradesh government has directed the officials to review market prices every day and ensure that there was no unprecedented rise in wholesale and retail rates.
"The divisional commissioners and district magistrates should review market price of essential commodities every day and ensure that there was no unexpected rise and goods are available in adequate quantity," State chief secretary Atul Kumar Gupta said during a meeting held here last evening.
"Effective price control should be ensured and if any person is found involved in hoarding or black marketeering of essential commodities stern action will be taken against him," he said.
The chief secretary said that 24,200 MT of yellow peas would be imported at cheaper rates and provided to the consumers at Rs15 per kg through fair price shops.
Gupta said that there was huge difference between wholesale and retail prices of edible items in the market.
"While there is a difference of 13% in wholesale and retail price of rice, it is as high as 41% in case of potato, therefore special attention should be paid on price control," the chief secretary directed.
He said that vigil should be kept on proper distribution of food grain under public distribution system.
Agencies like the Essential Commodities Corporation, Employees Welfare Organisation, PCF, PCDF and horticulture federation should purchase vegetables and other essential commodities in bulk and set up their sale counters in major cities, he said.
