Issuing strict directives here, the Uttar Pradesh police chief today asked cops to ensure decency and not to use harsh words and abusive language while interrogating women, children and those belonging to the lower strata of society in police custody.

"Complaints have been recieved from different quarters regarding misbehaviour of policemen with women, children and those belonging to the lower strata of the society, while interrogation them in police custody. This should be stopped immediately and decent language should be used while interrogation people in police custody," director general of Police, Vikram Singh said in a letter to all the district police chiefs and other senior officers.

He added though guideliness had been issued on this matter by the government in the past, no remarkable improvement was observed in behaviour of police.

Singh said that indecent behaviour of policemen and use of harsh and abusive language by them maligned image of the department and it should be avoided.

Warning strict against erring officials, Singh said that it had come to his notice that old aged persons and even children were lodged under Goonda Act, which was not fair.

"Before initiating action, age of the person should be verified and old aged persons and children should not be unnecessarily harrassed," he said.
