As many as 300 police officials have been deployed in Nagorivad area of Shahpur, after communal tension was reported from the place since Saturday. Late on Sunday night two people were stabbed but details were not available.

The clash took place when a group of around 15 people were on their way to Sabarmati river bank to immerse an idol of Lord Krishna as part of a ritual.

Sources said when the group was passing by a mosque in Nagorivad known as 'Pattharvali Masjid', arguments began among the group and another group which asked the people not to make noise as it was time to offer namaaz. The argument soon went out of control and communal tension began in the area. But police officials refused to reveal what exactly led to the clashes.

As many as five people have been reported to be injured in the clashes on Sunday.
Assistant Commissioner of Police 'C' Division, NN Gohil said, "The police lobbed 20 teargas shells to curb tension in the area." He refused to disclose further details.
Sources in the police department said that around 80 teargas shells were lobbed to control the angry mob.

Clashes again began at around 3 pm on Sunday and soon spread to other parts of Shahpur like Rentiyavadi. Sources said five huts were set on fire by an angry mob.
