Hospital sources said Obaid Ahmed Rather, who was seriously injured in the firing by security forces at Watargam in north Kashmir, succumbed to his injuries in Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences of Kashmir in the wee hours of Monday.
Five protesters got injured when security forces opened fire at them at Watergam on Sunday. Police, however, said they were injured while dealing with law and order situation.
Body of Zameer Ahmad Dar was fished out of Jhelum at Wanjipora on Monday taking the toll in the drowning incident to two. Police had said one person had drowned and five others were rescued when their boat capsized in Sambal area of central Kashmir. However, local alleged they jumped after they were chased by the security forces trying the quell the local demonstrations in the area.
Jammu and Kashmir government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into both the incidents. Police have also been instructed to lodge an FIR in both the cases. The state government has announced Rs1 lakh ex-gratia the kin of the three deceased.
For the third day the Kashmir Valley remained under strict curfew without any relaxation. “Curfew remained in major towns of the Valley. The day so far passed off peacefully and the situation is under control. There was no untoward incident from anywhere. However, stray incidents of stone-pelting were reported in which two policemen got injured,” police said.
Meanwhile, a CRPF inspector received severe injuries after being hit with sharp objects in Baramullah district. He has been rushed to the hospital. IG CRPF Kashmir SS Sandhu said he is out of danger.
Additional security forces have been mobilised to maintain law and order in the Valley. Reports suggest additional 14 companies of BSF have reached the Valley to augment the existing forces in the Valley.
