2 die as mobs go on rampage in Kashmir

Protests are spreading again in the Kashmir valley with angry mobs going on the rampage, attacking and torching government establishments.

The situation worsened on Saturday when police killed two youth during protests in Naidkhai and Baramulla. Muddasir Ahmad Lone was killed when security forces opened fire on a mob which allegedly tried to attack their camp at Naidkhai-Sumbal in Bandipora area. Several policemen including Sheikh Junaid, SP, Bandipora received head injuries in the incident
“Lone was brought dead to the hospital,” said Dr Ifthikar Ahmad at Community Health Centre, Sumbal.   

Another youth, Javid Ahmad, was killed when he was hit by a bullet fired by the police at Baramulla Saturday afternoon. Javid was rushed to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar, in critical condition where he succumbed to the wound.  

A police spokesperson the police had to fire at different places to restrain the unruly crowds from causing further damage to the life and property. As a result two persons died and 11 civilians received injuries during lathi-charge, the spokesman said.

With two more killings the toll in the security forces firing has touched six in the last 24 hours. More than 150 people including security men have suffered wounds in the clashes since Friday in the Kashmir valley.

Meanwhile, three people including two women were critically wounded when an SOG camp housed in an old police station and horticulture building was torched in Kreeri area in Baramulla district on Saturday.

Two air force vehicles were torched in Pampore by the angry mob which defied the curfew and blocked the Srinagar-Jammu highway. A number of policemen received injuries in this incident while rescuing the air force staff from these vehicles, police said.

A petrol bomb was also thrown at a police vehicle at Kakpora which gutted it completely. A number of policemen received injuries in this incident as well when they attempted to rescue the air force staff from these vehicles, police said.

DIG south Kashmir Shafaqat Watali said the mob attacked the police station at Pampore but they exercised restraint. “We did not open fire despite the mob attacking our police station from two sides. The mob also attacked Bijbhera police station but they dispersed later. At Sangam the mob had cut trees and blocked the road. We are exercising maximum restrain,” said Watali.
