MUMBAI: Nearly three weeks after the terror attack in Mumbai, the Police is clueless as to what to do with the bodies of nine Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists killed on November 26 since various Muslim organisations have refused to bury them in the country while Islamabad appears to be disinclined to accept the mortal remains.
Mumbai Police had been advised to write a letter to the Pakistan High Commission in Delhi through the Ministry of
External Affairs asking them to take the custody of the nine bodies after the 60-hour long encounter that ended on November 29.
The bodies have been kept in J J Hospital mortuary with Police waiting for a political decision before disposing off the bodies.
While Pakistan has been trying to crackdown on Lashkar militants in its country, it has been denying that it has received any communication from New Delhi to take possession of the dead bodies of the nine militants.
When approached about the disposal of the dead bodies of LeT militants, Mumbai's Commissioner of Police Hasan Gafoor said that "If there are no claimants, then there are other procedures laid in the law for disposing the bodies."
Without confirming or denying whether they had approached MEA for handing over the bodies to Pakistan, Gafoor said "I can only say that all necessary procedures as per the law have been followed. According to the law, we have to hand over the bodies to a claimant. In case no one comes, we will take the necessary measures."
Hospital authorities, meanwhile, said that they were awaiting a decision by the police on the fate of the bodies. "We are in correspondence with police everyday. Police have not yet decided on what needs to be done with the bodies of the nine terrorists, which are in the mortuary," superintendent of J J Hospital H H Jadhav said.
The Muslim Council in Mumbai has decided not to permit the burial of the bodies of the nine terrorists who were gunned down by the NSG commandos.
The terrorists have been identified based on the interrogation of Mohammed Ajmal Amir Iman alias Abu Mujahid from Ukara, the lone militant caught alive.
The two militants who attacked the Chhatrapati Shivjai Terminus and Cama Hospital have been identified as Ismail Khan
alias Abu Ismail from Dera Ismail Khan by Mohammed Ajmal Amir.
The attackers of Taj Hotel were identified as Hafeez Arshad alias Bada Abdul Rehman from Multan, Javed alias Abu
Ali from Okara, Shoaib alias Soheb from Sialkot and Nazeer alias Abu Umer from Faisalabad.
Nasir alias Abu Umar from Faisalabad and Babar Imran alias Abu Akasha from Multan attacked the Jewish community centre in Nariman house in Colaba area.
Abdul Rehman alias Abdul Rehman Chhota from Multan and Fahadullah alias Abu Fahad from Okara were the duo who attacked the Trident Oberoi hotel.
The photograph of one of the terrorists identified by Ajmal as Nazeer alias Abu Umer, who was killed by NSG commandos at the Taj Hotel, was not released since the body was charred.
