The panic buying of petrol by motorists in Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana region has left petrol pumps high and dry.

The oil companies said the ongoing Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) agitations are causing supply problems. No tanker was allowed to enter into the city on Sunday and Monday, creating shortage of fuel for a while. Some of the company-owned outlets operated and got exhausted after a few hours. Though the supplies were normal on Tuesday, Wednesday again saw huge crowds in the pumps for fuel.

"We have sold more than twenty lakh litres of petrol on Tuesday, and it was twice the normal demand," an oil company official said. There are 600 petrol pumps of various oil companies in Hyderabad.

In view of the peace rally on Thursday, announced by the TRS and others, people started queuing up at petrol pumps leading to closure of many outlets hanging 'no stock' boards.

The continuous agitations called by Telangana Rashtra Samithi and other groups for separate Telangana pushed motorists in a state of uncertainty, causing panic buying.

Taking advantage of a series of agitations, autorickshaws and other taxis are making a killing by inflating charges.

There are around 50,000 autos in the city and the minimum charge is Rs12 for a distance of 1.5 km. However, the people have been complaining that autowalas are charging a minimum of Rs50 to Rs300 irrespective of the distance.

Most of the autos do not run on meter. They demand us  to pay a lump sum, said Om Prakash, a software professional, who claimed to have shelled out Rs120 for a distance of 7 km.

However, some of the auto rickshaw drivers defended inflated charges saying that the petrol pumps are charging Rs90 per litre.

The Twin Cities Petrol and Diesel Retail Dealers Association's Prabhakar Reddy refuted the allegation.

He said no petrol pump is charging more than the official price. The civil supplies department constantly monitors the situation. People are buying double the quantity they usually buy, Prabhakar Reddy said.
