For almost five years, he was the face of Revenue Intelligence in Tamil Nadu. C Rajan, additional director general, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence, was one of the familiar faces regularly seen in TV channels and vernacular newspapers along with the seizure of smuggled goods which included star tortoises, ketamine, ephedrine, red sanders and of course, the yellow metal. Tirunelveli-born Rajan had the image of an honest and ruthless super cop. But it all came crashing down on Wednesday with officials of the CBI arresting him red handed for accepting graft to the tune of Rs2 lakh and a costly iPod as gratitude to save a Non Resident Indian (NRI) from foreign exchange violation act. Rajan has been sent to Puzhal Jail.

Police sources said that a costly Ipod, believed to be part of the graft, was recovered from the official, who had served as customs commissioner at Chennai airport. A team of CBI officials picked up Rajan from his residence after receiving a specific complaint regarding the alleged bribe.

It is alleged that Rajan had demanded a bribe of Rs8 lakh from a mobile phone importer for de-freezing his bank accounts and to discharge him from a smuggling case. The officer was arrested in an operation which had all ingredients of a Bollywood pot-boiler. There was the conduit to hand over the money, the agent allegedly deputed by Rajan to receive the money and a posse of police officials with all the paraphernalia associated with this kind of mission.

A raid at Rajan's house home by the team of officials yielded details of many bank accounts and sensitive documents regarding properties purchased during the last five years. A top CBI source told DNA that the operation  was collecting clinching evidence against the official. "We went by the adage Mistrust the Obvious. Rajan never had a good reputation and we followed the leads," said the officer. But his friends claim that Rajan has been victimized as per the directions of a political bigwig from Tamil Nadu. "The politician with big connections in New Delhi had been trying to get rid of Rajan once and for all,” said his friend.
