Swine flu has claimed one more life in Gujarat, taking the toll in the state to three, health officials said today.

Anandiben Patel (37) died of H1N1 infection in a private hospital here where she was admitted on August 11 with respiratory distress syndrome. She died on August 13 but only late last night it was confirmed that swine flu was the cause of her death, they said.

Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and the Health Department have issued notices to the Sidhivinayak Hospital where the patient died as the private medical facility collected the samples for swine flu test without authority.

"Initially, she was diagnosed with influenza A. Subsequently, the hospital collected her samples for H1N1 on August 13 and sent for testing to Civil Hospital. Meanwhile, the patient died on the same day but her sample tested positive (for swine flu) on August 16," principal secretary Health Ravi Saxena said.

The Health Department or any other government agency was not informed by the private hospital about Patel's admission, he said.

"We have launched an inquiry and issued a notice to the hospital," Saxena said, adding, "Only selected private hospitals are authorised to treat the swine flu patients in the state."

Saxena said the private hospital should have shifted the patient to the government hospital where special isolated wards have been created for the treatment of swine flu cases.

All the contact persons of the patient have been traced and kept under observation, Saxena added.

Earlier, two persons - Pravin Patel (43) and Arya Borde (7) - had died of swine flu in Ahmedabad and Vadodara respectively.

Meanwhile, six more people tested positive for the deadly virus in Ahmedabad, taking the total H1N1 infections in the state to 45.

"The number of positive swine flu cases so far has gone up to 45 in the state. Today six people - four males and two females - tested positive in Ahmedabad," said health minister Jaynarayan Vyas.

Currently, 28 patients are undergoing treatment in various hospitals: Ahmedabad (11), Vadodara (9), Surat (7) and Bhavnagar (1), he said.
