While swimming can be a good exercise to maintain body fitness, contaminated water at the pool can also lead to severe skin diseases. According to Congress allegations, swimmers at Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s (AMC) Ramanbhai Lallubhai Swimming Pool at Lal Darwaja have to face this plight. However, AMC officials denied any such problem and refuted Congress’s claim in the AMC monthly board meeting on June 27.

Congress corporator from Raikhad ward, Vinod Kantharia raised the issue of drainage water mixing in the pool water in Lal Darwaja swimming pool. He said that he had received complaints from swimmers that they are subjected to skin diseases because of the contaminated water.

Moreover, infrastructure at swimming pools are not in good shape. The floors of the pool areas are leaking at the Lal Darwaja pool and the Sarangpur pool. As a result, water level goes down by one and a half feet just in less than six hours, an employee at the swimming pool complained.

Apart from this, small girls up to age of 12 years have to change their clothes in the open after having shower after a swim, the corporator alleged.

However, AMC officials have denied allegations of seepage of drainage water into the pool. The drainage overflowing problem there has been resolved, claimed Ganji Chaudhary, superintendent of swimming pools in AMC. But he admitted that that the water is not so clean because of the sand that comes from Sabarmati riverfront. However, he stated that the authorities carry out cleaning exercise regularly so that swimmers do not face any problem.

The officials also said that AMC is planning to renovate the Lal Darwaja swimming pool along with Sarangpur and Sabarmati swimming pools. However, renovation work of swimming pool at Lal Darwaja is likely to take some more time as it has not been included in the budget for 2012-13. “The swimming pools at Sarangpur and Sabarmati will be renovated at cost of Rs2 crore and Rs1 crore, respectively. The engineering department of the respective zones will take care of the civil work,” said SK Langa, deputy municipal commissioner of AMC.
