Managing heightened terrorist threats at airports and vital nuclear installations in the country seems to have taken a toll on paramilitary forces.

According to the latest statistics, the number of personnel suffering from severe health problems in the central industrial security force (CISF) has more than doubled.

The number of personnel suffering from Aids, cancer, skin diseases, heart problems, mental diseases and depression has shot up to 939 already this year — with half the year still to go — compared to 379 in 2009 and 162 in 2008.

Senior CISF officials said of the 939 suffering from health problems in the paramilitary force, around 606 have high blood pressure.

“It’s the first time that we have included high blood pressure while conducting medical profiling of our personnel and officials. This is perhaps why the number of people suffering from health problems has drastically risen compared to previous years,” a senior CISF official said.

Interestingly, only the CISF has seen such a rise among all the paramilitary forces. There is a sharp fall in numbers in the central reserve police force (CRPF), which handles internal security.

Around 1,621 personnel have fallen ill in the CRPF so far in 2010, while till last year the count stood at 20,567, and 22,826 in 2008.

Similarly, there is a sharp fall in the number of security personnel suffering from health problems in the border security force (BSF), as the figure in 2010 stands at 60, while till last year around 696 personnel were ill and the figure stood at 971 in 2008.

The situation in the northeast-based paramilitary force, Assam Rifles, is no different. There has been a slight fall in the number of those ill. The figure for 2010 is 718 so far, while it was 826 in 2009 and 703 in 2008.
