Spanish national arrested in Gurgaon

A Spanish national, who was evading court proceedings in a 2006 accident case in the capital and declared a proclaimed offender, was arrested from Gurgaon, police said today.

A Spanish national, who was evading court proceedings in a 2006 accident case in the capital and declared a proclaimed offender, was arrested from Gurgaon, police said today.

Gerardo Moranmte Mondez was apprehended from his residence - the Residency Apartments in Ar Dee City in Sector 52 of Gurgaon, Virender Chahal, additional commissioner of police (south-east), said.

Mondez was declared proclaimed offender in June last year by a local court after he failed to appear before the court in a motor accident case of 2005, the official said.

The accused, who worked in Spanish Embassy and was residing in Lajpat Nagar-III, in May 2005 hit one Utsav Dar, a resident of Sarita Vihar, while driving his car rashly in front of Deshbandhu College.

Dar sustained grievous injuries and was arrested the next day.

During trial, Mondez did not appear before the court and also left the job from Spanish Embassy and his Lajpat Nagar-III residence and and started to live in Gurgaon without giving his present residential address either to the court or to the police, Chahal said.

He was also wanted in Motor Accident Claims Tribunal as his car was not insured on the day of accident. Also his car was also seized in a case of NDPS Act at Narcotics Branch which found that it was used for smuggling of drugs, he said.
