Space scientists want a society grounded in science

As the world celebrates 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, a galaxy of space scientists along with eminent astronomers got together at a brainstorming session titled 'Indian Astronomy, Ancient & Modern'.

As the world celebrates 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy, a galaxy of space scientists along with eminent astronomers got together at a brainstorming session titled 'Indian Astronomy, Ancient & Modern' organised at the Town Hall.

The conference, which began on June 27, will last till June 30. The conference highlighted India's heritage in astronomy. Noted professor and scientist Dr UR Rao, chairman of the governing council of the Physical Research Laboratory and former chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation, inaugurated the conference.

A keynote address on "Aryabhata to Chandrayaan and Beyond" was also given on this occasion.  "Today we stand on the shoulders of the past. ISRO has achieved a lot with its space programmes and India's contribution to the world of science is overwhelming" Rao said. The conference had special sessions for school and college students and teachers on great scientists such as  Homi Bhabha and Sir CV Raman.

During the conference, a documentary film on the solar system, Einstein and Galileo was also shown.  "Science must be made popular among children," said Dr JJ Rawal, convener of the event.  Awards were presented by the Indian Planetary Society to various individuals for popularising science. Three books titled 'Indian Astronomy Ancient and Modern', 'Virat Surya' and 'Kids Science' were released on the occasion.
