The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) appears to be facing the same problem many big business houses face when they add manpower —  of office space.

Keeping in mind the 33% reservation for women in its organisational set-up, the party raised the number of office-bearers by around 40%. Result: many new entrants do not have office space for themselves.

The party is looking for some creative solutions.

Among those without office space are new vice-presidents Hema Malini, Bhagat Singh Koshiyari, Najma Heptullah, Bijoya Chakravarti and Kiran Ghai. New general secretaries Vasundhara Raje, Dharmendra Pradhan, Arjun Munda and Jagat Singh Nadda have also not got their own office space yet.

One solution to create office space at 11, Ashoka Road, the party’s national headquarters, is shifting the media cell and press conference facilities to the neighbouring 9, Ashok Road. The bungalow was allotted to leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, who handed it over to the party.

“Some of the offices will be shifted  to Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Marg, where some land has been allotted to us along with other parties,” a senior BJP leader said.

Apart from regular office-bearers, the party has nearly two dozen cells and special groups such as the legal cell and investors’ cell that need office space.

“Many of our new office-bearers are currently based outside Delhi. But, that will change soon,” the party leader said.

As of now, the party headquarters is in the protected Lutyen’s bungalow zone and just how tolerant the government would be to this expansion plan of the BJP needs to be seen.
