Here is some respite for the city's traffic cops. The traffic police department and Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation have finally agreed to open traffic booths at BRTS stations and at the flyovers in some of the critical places for handling traffic in the city.

Both the organisations are going to construct eight new traffic booths which will be a relief for traffic cops who don't have a place to sit down and get refreshed during intervals.

According to sources in the traffic department around two months back, Joint Commissioner of Police, Mohan Jha had written a letter to the Municipal Corporation's chairman IP Gautam, suggesting to give space to construct new traffic booths under the flyovers and at BRTS stations.

"We have written a letter to the AMC and requested to let us use the vacant spaces at BRTS stations and under the flyovers. The process is going on in a positive way and we hope that in coming days we will finalise things," said Jha.

On the other hand, AMC Commissioner IP Gautam confirmed that he has received a letter in this regard in which the traffic department had requested for vacant spaces at BRTS stations and flyovers for the construction of new booths.

The new booths will be constructed at some of the critical areas for traffic handling such as Shivrajani Cross road, Nehrunagar, Akhbarnagar among others.

Shivanand Swami, assistant director, CEPT, also confirmed the development and said that the department is looking forward and will let the spaces to be used to construct traffic booths. He also said that the AMC will provide all the basic amenities including electrification.

It's worth mentioning that at present the department has only 10 traffic booths against a requirement of 35. This backlog creates a lot of problem for cops. At many places, traffic police have to go to a nearby shopping complex or a road side spot to attend to nature's call.

Besides, according to sources, the traffic department is also going to invest a handsome amount of money to give the present booths a facelift. The department has bagged Rs3.5 crore funds recently out of which around 50% of it will be spend on providing basic amenities such as cooler water, electric fans and toilets among others.

"This is good news for us. We really needed traffic booths because apart from handling traffic, there are other official works that we have to perform. But in the absence of a proper place, the work becomes sluggish. We also need decent toilet and drinking facilities at booths which we don't have according to our need," said RG Jadeja, ACP traffic police, Ahmedabad.
