Congress today said the intention of Bal Thackeray's daughter-in-law Smita to join the party reflected the growing "disenchantment and disillusionment" of every Indian with Shiv Sena.

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi, however, declined to comment on Smita joining the party, saying "it is a decision to be taken by other bodies" in the party.

He described Shiv Sena as a "party of the past, ignoring the present and undermining and sabotaging the future".

Another AICC spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, "If Maharashtra Congress agrees, then there is no problem in her (Smita) joining the Congress."

"It is good that she has realised that Congress and its leadership are doing a good job for the nation and welfare and uplift of the common man," he said.

Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Hussain Dalwai said that 48-year-old Smita, a film producer and social worker, may soon join Congress.

"Smita Thackeray is on her way to joining the Congress," he said in Mumbai.

Smita is the estranged wife of Bal Thackeray's son Jaidev.
