To prevent water pollution, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has decided to redevelop the waste disposal site at Bhatar.

The site measuring 23 hectares has more than 25 lakh tonne of waste, which is polluting the surrounding ecology. The entire site will be redeveloped now in three phases.

The civic body aims to redevelop the site and make it eco-friendly.

The entire site will be revamped at a cost of Rs11.5 crore and will be done in phases.
In the first phase, mangroves will be planted on the empty land of Gandhi-Kutir Bridge at cost of Rs28 lakh.

In the second phase, embankment wall will be developed around the site near Kankara Khadi. A rivulet passes from a large portion of the disposal site, because of which many times, waste flows into the water and makes it polluted. The wall will be created at cost of Rs3 crore on the entire area adjoining rivulet to prevent pilferage.

In the third phase, a gas ventilation system will be developed at the site to level the gathered waste and pump out Methane gas. The system will be accordance to the guidelines set by CPCB (Centeral Pollution Control Board) to prevent emission of gas in the nearby areas. The cost for the project is estimated at Rs8 crore.

"The site is more than 25 years old, with more than 25 lakh tonne of waste stored in it. As per CPCB rules, a disposal site should have four types of cover - soil, vegetation, drainage and polythene, to prevent pollution. This being a big site, proper planning was badly needed. Majority of waste has degraded having huge quantity of methane gas," EH Pathan, head of solid waste department (SMC), said.

Pathan added that soil, water and air of nearby areas is getting affected due to undeveloped facilities at the site. The proposal has been forwarded before BJP rulers for final nod and tender will be floated once approved.
