Shweta Mahajan files for divorce

NEW DELHI: Shweta Mahajan, wife of slain BJP leader Pramod Mahajan’s son Rahul, on Thursday, filed for divorce at the Gurgaon district court. The couple had tied the knot just 15 months ago.

Shweta, who was accompanied by her mother and a lawyers, has cited “incompatibility beyond reconciliation” as the reason for separation.

Rahul and Shweta, who were long-time friends and had completed their flying course together abroad, got married on August 29, 2006, barely four months after Pramod’s death.

Rahul was in the midst of a legal battle over his alleged drug abuse when the marriage took place. Soon after, their married life came under the public glare after media reports of Shweta being subjected to physical and verbal abuse by Rahul. The couple had maintained there was no trouble between them.

Shweta’s lawyers told reporters that the couple had mutually decided to seek divorce. District and sessions judge Ramendra Jain will hear the case on January 24, when Rahul is expected to present his stand in court.

Shweta maintained a silence on the issue, saying, “Please, it is very personal and leave it at that. I don’t want to speak on the matter at all.”
