Commenting on the Supreme Court’s verdict into the 2002 Gulberg Society massacre case, corporate affairs minister M Veerappa Moily on Monday said it doesn't exonerate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi of the charges levelled against him for his role in the carnage.
"That doesn't mean he has been exonerated. The matter is still under adjudication under various litigations at the Supreme Court, various other agencies and also the Gujarat high court. So I don't think one can rejoice that nothing has happened to him," Moily told mediapersons.
"Any person who commits anything wrong or grave offence like this or particularly genocide like this, I don't think, one can so easily escape. I am not referring individually to Narendra Modi. Somebody has to be held accountable for the great genocide that had taken place in Gujarat," he added.
The Supreme Court earlier in the day refused to pass any order on the petition alleging inaction on the part of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi to contain the 2002 riots after the Godhra carnage and referred the matter to the concerned magistrate in Ahmedabad for a decision.
A three-judge bench headed by Justice DK Jain directed the SIT, which is probing the riot cases, to submit its final report before the magistrate who was asked to decide whether to proceed against Modi and 63 others, including senior government officials.
The bench made it clear that there was no need for it to further monitor the riot cases.
The apex court bench, which also comprised Justices P Sathasivam and Aftab Alam said in case the magistrate decides to drop proceedings against Modi and others, he has to hear the plea of slain MP Ehsan Jafri's widow Zakia Jafri, who had filed a complaint against the Gujarat Chief Minister.
