A mad rush to get admission in the science stream of class XI was seen in the city on Friday after students, who recently cleared their class X exams, were given their mark-sheets. Popular schools in the city saw parents and students making a beeline for the forms with an average of 500 forms per school sold on the first day.

The district education officer has stated that after the distribution of the forms for class XI comes to an end, the first merit list of schools will be out on June 12.

Talking to DNA about the rush for the forms, principal of the Sheth CN Vidyavihar, Hitendra Trivedi said that against 198 the seats in its science stream, the school had managed to sell around 525 forms.

With schools announcing that admissions will strictly given on the basis of the merit, many parents feel helpless as they have to fill forms for more than three schools to ensure admission of their wards in at least one of the good schools.

“While admitting students based on merit, we are following a format decided by the state government. Hence, we cannot even directly admit students who have studied at our school in earlier years,” he said.

According to one estimate, there are around 190 schools in city that offer studies in the science stream. This takes the total number of available seats to around 16,000, stated officials at the district education office (DEO).

Last year, around 1,500 seats had remained vacant in the science stream.

“This year, however, students might not get admission in their favourite school as they would be admitted based strictly on the merit criterion,” said an official at the DEO. Other merit lists would be out by June 16 at the latest, the official added.
