The city’s academic fraternity was shaken by the news on Thursday that a girl a sent an email from the US, reportedly accusing her PhD guide of raping her in the Gujarat University hostel.  But the family members of the girl have denied that the incident and said that she was being blackmailed by  a man who is an acquaintance.

On the other hand, Ahmedabad police commissioner has ordered a probe into the matter. Also,  Gujarat University Vice Chancellor Parimal Trivedi has asked his officials to file a police case against the person who has sent the email.

Talking to DNA, the girl's brother said: "My sister and family members have been undergoing tremendous mental torture for last two years. The person, Nimish Joshi, has been harassing us for a long time. He is a pharmacologist and he had met my sister when she was working in a pharmaceutical company while doing her PhD. He got close with my sister, but when she came to know that Joshi is married, she stopped talking to him."

He further said, "Joshi had taken photographs of my sister and recorded her telephone conversation with him and started blackmailing my sister and demanded that she should surrender to him. Meanwhile, Joshi went to Canada and is still sending letters and photographs and threatening our family. He wants to defame my sister and spoil our family's image. We had been silent till now to keep my sister away from any sort of pressure and so that she could focus on her PhD research."

Trivedi said, "We received some emails from the person earlier too. This is a very serious allegation. I have talked to the girl and her family members and they have rubbished the entire incident. The girl was not present in the hostel on the date mentioned in the email." Sources in the university said, "The girl is innocent and a person called Joshi was harassing her.''

ACP (Crime) Usha Rada said the investigation in the case had been given to her.
