BJP today described the sacking of Air India union leaders as "draconian" and warned the government that its actions would lead to shutdown of the national carrier.

"The draconian action of the government in sacking the Air India union leaders who were legitimately elected will certainly complicate the situation," BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy said.

In an unprecedented action, Air India sacked a total of 58 employees including union leaders, suspended another 24 and de-recognised two unions which led a two-day strike by the employees of the national carrier.

The main opposition demanded a categorical explanation from the prime minister on the "designs" of the government.

"Is the government intentionally heading for a showdownleading inevitably to the shutdown of the company? Is it a cover-up exercise of the government on the Air India merger mess?" Rudy asked.

He alleged that the government was "instigating" a complete collapse of the national carrier.
