Students from reputed institutes in urban areas have always had an edge over their rural counterparts when it comes to getting picked for jobs at prestigious companies with lucrative pay packages. However, this is all set to change.

Thanks to the placement cell of Gujarat Technology University (GTU), lucrative job offers from companies will depend on the merit of students from the 495 colleges affiliated to the varsity. The new system- merit based placement- is a part of Integrated Training and Placement Cell (ITPC) at the GTU.

Earlier, any company wanting to recruit graduating students would visit the institute directly and not the varsity. In majority of the cases, companies avoid going to institutes and colleges in lesser developed and rural areas. As a result, capable and deserving students fail to get opportunities to work with reputed companies.

As per the new system of the ITPC, the 495 institutes and affiliated colleges will be divided into seven zones. Following this, companies' requirements for recruitment will be shared by the placement officials appointed by the varsity.

Explaining the new system, Pavan Dwivedi, ITPC coordinator at GTU, said the idea behind the new system was to come up with a common platform that would provide similar job opportunities to students from both urban and rural areas. "The placement officers in the seven zones will come up with specifics of meritorious students and provide the same to companies that approach us with requests for recruitment. The list will also have details of meritorious students from the remotest of areas," said Dwivedi.

He added, sometimes companies make their own credit assessment of institutes before recruiting students. So, if companies don't object to recruiting students from the rural parts, GTU will take the opportunity and bridge the gap.

This is one of the nine different criteria penned by the placement officers in the seven zones in the state.
