Rs19 crore received for cyclone relief after Tamil Nadu CM appeal

Days after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa made a public appeal for donation towards relief work for cyclone-Thane battered Cuddalore and Villupuram districts, a sum of over Rs19 crore has been received for this purpose, government said on Thursday.

Groups and individuals continued to contribute towards the Chief Minister's General Relief Fund, taking the sum to Rs19.53 crore, a government press release in Chennai said.

Among those who made their contribution on Thursday were transport Minister V Senthil Balaji who donated Rs6.85 crore on behalf of state Transport undertakings, former DGP R Nataraj, AIADMK MLA Vaiagai Chelvan, Vice-Chancellor and staff of Anna University, South Indian Artistes' Association and actor-politician R Sarath Kumar MLA among others, it added.

Jayalalithaa, whose government has sought a Rs5,249 crore relief package from the Centre, had recently appealed for contribution from philanthropists and others saying Cyclone Thane had caused unprecedented damage to infrastructure, crops and houses in Cuddalore and Villupuram districts.

The Chief Minister had sanctioned Rs850 crore towards relief measures.
