A delegation of BJP top brass led by LK Advani will meet prime minister Manmohan Singh on Wednesday to submit a memorandum on inflation and register their protest against government's "failure" to control prices of sugar and other essential commodities.
Besides Advani, the delegation will comprise party chief Nitin Gadkari, leader of opposition in Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj and her counterpart in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley, as well as former party presidents Rajnath Singh and M Venkaiah Naidu among others, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said.
These leaders will submit a memorandum to Singh on the issue of price rise and demand that government take appropriate action at the earliest.
The delegation was earlier scheduled to meet the prime minister tomorrow but had to postpone the meeting as Singh, Advani, Gadkari and Swaraj will attend the funeral of former West Bengal chief minister Jyoti Basu in Kolkata.
Aiming to revive the sagging morale of its party cadre after the second consecutive Lok Sabha poll defeat last year, a meeting of national office-holders of BJP had on January 7 decided to hold country-wide agitations, including all-women rallies, in three phases against price rise.
In the second week of March, BJP plans to hold a national rally and Parliament 'gherao' (surround) as part of this programme.
BJP top leadership also appointed a six-member committee headed by Ananth Kumar, and including Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and Gopinath Munde, to chalk out strategies for the programme.
Under the programme, BJP would hold demonstrations at its district headquarters from this week.
"In these demonstrations efforts would be made to include more and more poor people," Prasad said. State-level rallies will be organised from February 1 to 15 across the country.
"It was felt that in many states, women-only rallies should be held," he said.
Since the Lok Sabha poll debacle in 2009, confidence of BJP workers and leaders is low, even as some second rung central leaders fought among themselves to gain control over the party.
