Posh areas in Ahmedabad continue to be thieves' target

Almost half the loots and thefts in the city from January, 2011 to August 2011, have occurred in 10 police stations of Zone 1 area.

Almost half the loots and thefts in the city from January, 2011 to August 2011, have occurred in 10 police stations of Zone 1 area. Most of the posh localities of the city are included in this zone that comes under the police commissionerate. Of the total 2911 thefts and loots in the city in this period, over 1300 have taken place in Zone 1.

These figures were revealed by chief minister Narendra Modi in his capacity as state home minister, in reply to a query by Shailesh Parmar, Congress MLA from Shaherkotda.

Vastrapur and Satellite police stations have been most vulnerable when it comes to thefts in the area. Each police station registered 267 cases of thefts from January 1, 2011 to August 15, 2011. Both police stations have also been vulnerable for loots.

The highest number of loots in this zone occurred in Vastrapur (34), followed by Satellite (26). Of the total number of loots and thefts in the city, there were 2482 thefts and 429 cases of loots in the entire city under the police commissionerate's jurisdiction.

Of the total 2911 cases of loot and thefts in the city, 1134 thefts occurred in Zone 1, while 180 cases of loot took place in the same locality. A total of 46% of total thefts cases in the city were registered in Zone 1 locality. Posh localities of Satellite, Vastrapur, Anandnagar, Navrangpura, Ellisbridge etc are included in this zone.

After Satellite and Vastrapur police stations, Ellisbridge area was the next most vulnerable area. Out of total theft cases, 129 were registered in this area. Localities from Vasna, Paldi, Navrangpura etc lie under the jurisdiction of Ellisbridge police station. 

For theft cases, Ghatlodia (84), Naranpura (84) and Gujarat University (59) are the next most vulnerable police stations in the city. The numbers of loots was highest in Naroda police station (45) with Vastrapur following.

Talking to DNA Sudhir Sinha, police commissioner, Ahmedabad City, said, "We keep a close record of the accused arrested for these crimes and at the same time also ensure that the accused arrested for loots and thefts are booked under the Prevention of Anti Social Activities (PASA) Act.
