Chief minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that a handful of people involved in Gujarat bashing were now making futile attempts to disturb peace and unity in the state.

Modi was talking at the inauguration ceremony of Lajpore Central Jail in Surat on Sunday.

Speaking at the event on the eve of 10th anniversary of Sabarmati Express train carnage in Godhra, the CM said, "There might be only five or 25 anti-Gujarat elements trying in vain all tricks of the trade and mischief, prescribing poison in the society to create hatred afresh between people."

Challenging such 'disturbing' elements, the CM said they would not succeed in their sinister designs as the state has a strong foundation of brotherhood and peace. "This foundation has resulted in the state gathering inherent strength to attain new heights of development," he added.

Describing the new jail as amongst the country's most hi-tech ones, Modi said it would combine technology with humanity, when it comes to reform of the inmates. Modi also invited the Human Rights Commission to study the hi-tech system put in place. He was particularly critical about the Gujarat-bashers who try to malign the state on the human rights count.

The Central Jail, constructed at an estimated cost of around Rs 56 crore at Lajpore, can accommodate over 2,700 prisoners, official sources said. It is the first of its kind jail in the state to have been equipped with a video surveillance facility, amongst others, they said.

Taking the opportunity to hit out at his opponents at the public platform, he invited his opponents to tour Lajpore jail. "They should take a tour of the jail and inspect facilities developed here. They will understand that we even take care of our prisoners. And also while going-out, they should remember to taste the 'bhajiyaas' prepared by the inmates. Bhajiyaas prepared in jails are very famous," Modi quipped tongue-in-cheek.

He added that jail has all modern amenities, which are lacking in other jails of the country. Such facilities are created in the jail so that prisoners coming here get transformed into good human being.

"The incident itself is very unique where a chief minister is inaugurating a jail. Jails were developed by British Emprire, which used them against freedom fighters. They were tortured and harassed mentally. However, Lajpore Jail is completely different and prisoners are treated a humans," Modi further said.

He claimed that design of the jail was finalized only after studying numerous other jails worldwide, in-order to make it more environment friendly. "Those against Gujarat should visit Lajpore jail and see how much we are concerned about human rights. A visit to this jail will open their eyes," Modi added.
