A new peace formula suggested by Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas (trust) could rekindle hopes of a negotiated settlement of the 482-year-old Ayodhya dispute. Ironically, the new solution is linked to the genesis of the dispute.

Unveiling the latest gambit, Nyas member Ram Vilas Vedanti has suggested that Muslims build a mosque around the grave of Mir Baqi in Sahanwa area of Ayodhya. This area is a kilometre away from the disputed site and is outside the 67-acre area acquired by the Centre after the demolition of Babri Masjid.

It was Mir Baqi, a general of Mughal emperor Babar, who got the mosque built in 1528 in Ayodhya at a place which Hindus worshipped as the birthplace of Lord Ram.

Some years back,  Ayodhya’s Shia Muslims had suggested that the mosque be “shifted” to this site. However, talks over the issue between Hindu and Muslim religious heads broke down.

Sources say the Shias were amenable to the idea, but the Sunnis opposed it. Importantly, this is also the remedy suggested by 90-year-old Mohammad Hashim Ansari, who has been contesting the case since 1950. He has often said that the Muslims of Ayodhya had no objection to ‘building’ the mosque outside the disputed area.

Vedanti discussed the probable solution with Nirmohi Akhada sarpanch Mahant Bhaskar Das on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Ansari held a long meeting with Akhil Bharatiya Akhada Parishad president Mahant Gyan Das to discuss the proposal.

Nirmohi Akhada, VHP, Ram Janmabhoomi Nyas and Triloki Nath Pande, representatives of Lord Ram in the title suit, have said that any solution involving the construction of a mosque within the panchkosi parikrama area of the makeshift temple, where Lord Ram’s idols are kept,  would be unacceptable.

The UP Sunni Central Waqf Board, the petitioner for Muslims, has taken an equally harsh stand. “The court has given us one-third ownership so there’s no question of shifting the [proposed] mosque,” All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Zafaryab Jilani said.
