Parking along the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) corridor will not be  a problem  for the people of Ahmedabad.

The planning of the Ahmedabad Janmarg Ltd (AJL) will not only ensure adequate parking space, but also security of the vehicles parked. The AJL has installed dedicated parking strips along the 12.5-km-long BRTS stretch from the RTO to Pirana.

The parking strips, for two- and four-wheelers and with rickshaw stands, will be able to accommodate nearly 175 cars in each one-km stretch, according to estimates considering only cars are parked. Moreover, the parked vehicles will remain safe, provided the norms stipulated by the authorities are followed.

“People had developed a wrong idea of the BRTS project adding to the parking woes in Ahmedabad,” said Shivanand Swamy, team leader of the BRTS project.

On the other hand, the dedicated space will make the parking system more comfortable and systematic in terms of how and where to park the vehicles. “People can park their vehicles in the designated parking space and then catch a bus without any tension as their vehicles will remain safe,” Swamy said.

The parking space will be 50 metres from the BRTS junctions. There will also be special arrangements for bicycles, which will be located near the bus stations. The parking strips will be alongside the mixed traffic lanes.

The BRTS corridor will have 89 autorickshaw stands between the RTO and Pirana, with capacity to accommodate 679 autorickshaws. There will be mixed parking for two- and four-wheelers along the entire 12.5-km stretch of the BRTS. CEPT University took into consideration the number of vehicles parked on the roads along the BRTS corridor during ideation of the project.

Swamy further said that there will be provision for a number of vehicles greater than that during peak hours. The parking strips along the BRTS corridor will have space for more than 3,500 two-wheelers and more than 200 four-wheelers along nine stretches in various areas of the city. The parking facilities will be on paid basis.

However, the parking charges are yet to be decided. The tenders for the parking are ready and will be floated in the near future, a source close to the development said.
