The parents of an IFS officer killed by brigand Veerappan 20 years ago were on Tuesday paid their due compensation and other arrears.
Anantharao and Jayalakshmi, parents of deputy conservator of forests P Srinivas, received a cheque for Rs33.82 lakh and the title deed pertaining to a 60x40 ft BDA site from forest minister CH Vijayashankar. Srinivas was killed on November,10, 1991.
Vijayshankar told DNA that the payment of arrears had been delayed because the official’s mother and wife had both laid a claim to it. The wife went to court and finally the matter was decided in the mother’s favour. The minister admitted that a part of the delay was also caused by his department. Srinivas drew a monthly salary of Rs4,000 at the time of his death.
The parents of Srinivas had come all the way from Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh to receive the arrears. “We won’t get our son back. I am happy that at least now we are getting some money. My wife is 78- years-old and I am 81. This money will help us avail medical treatment,” Anantharao said.
Who was Srinivas?
Srinivas had made news for his Gandhian ways when Gandhigiri was yet to catch the nation’s imagination. Claiming that a change of heart could be effected in Veerappan, Srinivas sought to extend a hand of friendship to locals who were backing the brigand to the hilt. The forest officer was reportedly successful in getting a lot of Veerappan supporters to change their way.
A furious Veerappan is said to have decided to eliminate him and laid a trap by sending him a message that he would surrender. Srinivas who went to meet Veerappan on November 10, 1991 was captured and beheaded by the brigand in Namadalli forests of Kollegal taluk in Chamarajanagr district.
