The irony is palpable. While the number of cases registered under the Domestic Violence Act-2005 has shown an increase of over 2600% since 2007, around 84% of the total cases registered in the city remain unsolved.

As per the records of the metropolitan court in Gheekanta, there were 26 cases registered in 2007, which increased to 111 in 2008 and 490 in 2009. The number rose to 692 in the year 2010, an increase of 26 times from 2007.

However, it seems that the police has not been maintained the same enthusiasm in solving these cases. Of the 1330 cases registered since 2005, only around 200 have been solved. Most of the cases have been solved in out of court settlements.

Cranti - Citizens' Resource and Action Initiatives, who had made public the figures, has demanded fast-track courts for such cases and to increase the number of courts at village, taluka and city level.

A founding member of Cranti, Mallika Sarabhai, told DNA that Cranti provides help to the victims and empowers them to solve their problems.
